Your suburb profile by Running Property
Handily situated 5 km east of central Brisbane, Morningside (4170) is a residential suburb that’s currently home to more than 14,000 people.
It’s thought that Morningside was named either after the Scottish town, or as a reference to the area’s location on the eastern side of Brisbane (where the sun rises). When first settled in the early 1870s, Morningside was used for dairy, sugarcane, and tobacco farming. During the post-WWII boom Morningside became a popular residential area.
An unusual feature of Morningside were the electric trams which serviced the western part of the suburb until 1969. A famous local landmark is the Bulimba Cemetery (also known as Morningside Cemetery or Balmoral Cemetery) that dates from 1875. While it’s no longer used as an active cemetery, existing graves can be re-used for family members.
Morningside is well served by its two local shopping centres; Morningside Central on the corner of Junction Road and Wynnum Road, and the Colmslie Plaza on the opposite side of Junction Road. The well-liked Colmslie Hotel sits next to Colmslie Plaza.
Data from realestate.com.au shows that the median Morningside house price was $700K in 2016, with the median unit price being $485K. For investment property owners, Morningside offers a median rent for houses of $490 per week, and the median rent for units $420 per week. Rental demand for both houses and units is high.
